Amit Shah surfaces at BJP press conference

CBI likely to seek `jail & trial outside Gujarat` for Amit Shah
Former Minister of State for Home Amit Shah, who was on the run for the last three days after being charged with his alleged involvement in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, has finally appeared before the media during a BJP press conference here.
Shah has said that he was being framed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
"All the allegations against me are politically motivated and fabricated. None of the allegations are true," said Shah.
Earlier, it was being said that CBI has taken the Best Bakery line to get the case transferred outside Gujarat.
In the chargesheet that was filed on Friday, CBI stated that Shah has tried to influence witnesses in the fake encounter case and this argument, supported by evidence, is likely to be presented to the SC for the transfer of the case outside Gujarat.
Shah, who was charged with murder in Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, had resigned yesterday.
Narendra Modi had said yesterday that Shah has resigned but all charges against him are fabricated. The CBI has charged Shah with conspiracy to murder.
Modi had also said that he has received Shah`s resignation letter and will initiate the process once he reaches Ahmedabad.
Shah is accused of calling up policemen involved in the killing of Sheikh, who was a suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba operative. The CBI collected the phone records of the minister to prove his role in the execution of the staged killing, sources said.
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has been accused of killing Sheikh in a staged shootout on November 26, 2005, in Ahmedabad. His wife Kauserbi has been missing ever since.
The CBI took over the investigations of the fake encounter and mysterious murder of his wife Kausar Bi in January this year on the direction of the Supreme Court.

What is your doctor saying about you?

What is your doctor saying about you?

We’ve all seen our doctors scribbling in our charts after the exam. Now new research is exploring whether it’s a good idea to let a patient read the doctor’s notes, reports the Informed Patient column in Wall Street Journal.

A study currently under way, called the OpenNotes project, is looking at what happens when doctors’ notes become available for a patient to read, usually on electronic medical records. In a report on the early stages of the study, published Tuesday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers say that inviting patients to review the records can improve patient understanding of their health and get them to stick to their treatment regimens more closely.

But researchers also point to possible downsides: Patients may panic if their doctor speculates in writing about cancer or heart disease, leading to a flood of follow-up calls and e-mails. And doctors say they worry that some medical terms can be taken the wrong way by patients. For instance, the phrase “the patient appears SOB” refers to shortness of breath, not a derogatory designation. And OD is short for oculus dexter, or right eye, not for overdose.

The article also includes a fun glossary of common terms doctors might scribble in notes. Among others, there’s “NERD” for “no evidence of recurrent disease,” and “Shotty,” which is shorthand for “mildly enlarged lymph nodes.”

The ugly scandal broke out in the Indian women`s hockey after a member of the team, Ranjitha Devi sent in a written complaint of sexual harassment against national coach Kaushik.

Hockey India said: "It`s serious and we need to make an example out of this case. Ranjitha`s complaint very credible, must take it seriously."

Hockey India president Vidya Stokes on Thursday accepted Kaushik`s resignation, a day after he relinquished the post in the wake of the sex scandal that rocked the national game.

Kaushik tendered his resignation after a player leveled allegations of sexual harassment against him.

Although Kaushik stepped down from the coach`s post, he pleaded innocence, saying the allegations were baseless and he was a victim of "big-time conspiracy".

Ten tips to get a promotion at work

Ten tips to get a promotion at work

Getting a promotion involves more than just hard work. You need to work hard, be dedicated and competent in your job to get that big fat promotion.

Here are 10 tips that can help improve your chances of a promotion:

1. Set a goal and a path to get there

First, figure out what’s the next role or job you want. Then, do what it takes to get there, over and above your current job duties.

2. Don’t wait to be spoon-fed

In this dynamic world, organisations and jobs are evolving all the time and jobs are not simply a certain set of duties. Be on the lookout for what’s changing around you and step up to take on extra tasks when possible. It shows your drive, and perhaps helps the boss out a little bit. Don’t wait for your manager to come and tell you what else you should be doing. The promotion won’t come to you, you need to reach out to get it.

3. Be flexible and let it be known

Are you open to moving on to a new job function or to a different location for work? If yes, let your superiors know. Sometimes managers may perceive, for instance, that you might not want to move to another location because your children are in school or your husband can’t move, and thus pass you up for a promotion. Make sure you don’t get tagged with this label.

4. Mid-way feedback

The surest way to know if you are on the right track to where you want to go is to ask. While most companies have a formal performance appraisal process once a year, experts suggest that it might make sense to check in with your boss informally, mid-way through the year.

5. Turn challenges into opportunities

It sounds like self-help babble. But sometimes a promotion or opportunity may really come your way in the form of a challenge, such as a project in a remote part of the country.

If you sign up for it and do a good job, it shows management your ability to handle pressure and your grit.

6. Be a problem-solver, not a complainer

If you’re working on a project and there is a roadblock, don’t go running to your boss listing all the problems.

Instead, be positive and try to figure out ways to solve the problem. This can be a signal to your higher-ups that you have the ability to handle more than just your current job, and might be ready for a leadership role.

7. Find a mentor

If possible, find someone in your organisation to help guide you on what you need to do to move up and to improve your visibility in the organization. This is especially helpful in very large companies where younger employees may find it tough to know about various opportunities.

Finding the right mentor might not be easy. Mr. Mitra of Godrej advises looking for someone whose guidance and judgment you respect and with whom you share some emotional connection.

8. Are your goals aligned with the company’s?

As organizations evolve rapidly, they are looking for leaders who understand the company’s vision and whose goals are aligned with those of the company. When possible, find ways to make it clear to your superiors that, at the very least, you are interested in a long-term career at the company that will involve advancement from your current position.

9. Getting the boss equation right

Depending on the structure of your organization, your immediate supervisor may have a little or a lot to do with your promotion. So, keep him or her happy.

If your boss is holding you back, make sure that you’re visible to your boss’s boss, who likely will have a greater say in your advancement. Don’t be thwarted just because you think your immediate supervisor feels threatened by your promotion prospects.

10. Be patient.

It’s like job-hunting in a way. It requires a degree of karma. If you are overlooked for a promotion, don’t sweat too much. Complaining and whining could reduce your chance of being considered for the next one. Obviously, if you keep being overlooked you need to figure out why from your superiors.

One in five girls 'pregnant by the age of 18'

One in five girls `pregnant by the age of 18`

One in five sexually-active teenage girls in Britain has been pregnant by the age of 18 , shocking figures have revealed. The first survey of its kind found that 83 per cent of girls have lost their virginity by this age and 18 per cent of these youngsters have been pregnant at least once.About half chose to keep their babies and more than a third had an abortion, according to the Government survey.

According to report published in Daily Mail, previous research has shown that girls feel they are under increasing pressure to have sex before they are ready, partly because of sexy images projected in marketing and teen magazines.

The statistics from this latest study show more than a quarter of girls said they had not waited until the age of consent and twenty-sevenper cent of 4,298 girls questioned for the study had lost their virginity by the time they turned 16.The data once again reignites the controversy over Britain`s teenage pregnancy rate, which is the highest in Western Europe, and Labour`s decade of failure to tackle the problem.

Figures released earlier this year revealed there were more pregnancies among girls under 18 in England in 2008 that there were in 2001.Family values campaigners have long warned easy access to contraception and an emphasis on poor quality sex education which fails to encourage teenagers to say `no` is fuelling the problem.

The survey shows how education plays an important role for youngsters as they are significantly less likely to have been pregnant by 18 if they did well at school and their parents have degrees.

Democrat wins key US senate race in Alaska

Veteran Alaskan Republican Senator Ted Stevens narrowly lost his bid for re-election, increasing the Democrats' majority in the US upper house, US media has reported.

Stevens, 85, the longest-serving Republican in the senate, will be replaced by the mayor of Anchorage, Democrat Mark Begich, 46.

As Alaska's division of elections counted the last absentee ballots from the November 4 election. Begich was ahead by 3,724 votes, an insurmountable lead with only a few thousand absentee ballots left to be counted.

During his 40-year congressional career, Stevens had been known for steering billions of dollars in federal funds to his state. But he faced an uphill re-election bid after his conviction last month on charges of hiding $250,000 in gifts from an Alaska company.

Begich's victory brings the Democrats to two seats short of a 60-seat majority in the 100-member senate. It would be enough to prevent the Republicans from holding a filibuster, a parliamentary tactic to delay legislation through endless debate.

Two razor-close senate races remain to be decided.

Karunanidhi calls for ceasefire in Sri Lanka

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday again called for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka. He said that the military in the island nation was killing "innocent Tamils" in the name of fighting terrorism.

"The raining bombs meant to hit only terrorists in northern Sri Lanka end up killing the innocent Tamil minority. That is why we are demanding a ceasefire," he told reporters in Coimbatore, 500 km southwest of here.

"Only an immediate and total ceasefire in the northern part of the island will satisfy the (50 million plus) Tamils in India," Karunanidhi added.

Speaking at the conclusion of a hunger-strike led by Tamil movie icon Vijay in the evening, Communist Party of India (CPI) state secretary D Pandian said: "The second all-party meeting to be held tomorrow (Monday) will decide whether those regimes that have refused to act to save innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka should continue in power."

Actor Vijay was optimistic of a quick solution to the issue.

"The sentiments expressed here hopefully should cause the Sri Lankan government to think of solving the problem and allowing Tamils there to live in peace," Vijay said.

The day-long hunger-strike was held in over 35 centres in the state, a press statement of the matinee idol's fan club federation said.

Karunanidhi gets defamation notice from Jayalalitha

Karunanidhi gets defamation notice from Jayalalitha

A legal notice was forwarded to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, seeking an unconditional apology for making 'false allegations' against leader of opposition J Jayalalitha over the students clash at the law college here last week, an AIADMK lawyer has said.

"Karunanidhi should tender an unconditional apology for indicating the hand of the leader of opposition in the clashes in the Ambedkar Law College campus last week or be sued for Rs1 crore to be paid for defaming Jayalalitha," party lawyer Navaneethakrishnan said.

The two leaders were sparring with each other through statements on the issue since early this week.

While Karunanidhi said the statement was made as a mere aside during a chat with journalists, Jayalalitha took the matter seriously and threatened the chief minister with legal action.

On November 12, students of the law college had allegedly fought over the contents of an invitation for a political event. They attacked each other with sticks and iron rods.

Eyewitnesses said police officials remained mute spectators and failed to control the violence in which three students were injured.

The Tamil Nadu government on November 13 suspended nine policemen and the college principal for failing to control the violent clash between students. The government announced a probe into the incident by a retired Madras High Court judge.

Students of law colleges across the state held demonstrations and pelted stones on educational institutions to protest alleged police inaction last Wednesday.

The CSIR official died shortly after following the popular remedy of drinking a glass of juice from lauki or bottle gourd and bitter karela to control diabetes.

Saxena`s wife Neeraj, also a diabetic, was also hospitalized after drinking the lethal juice.

Experts say bitter bottle gourd juice can be lethal. These herbal remedies and vegetable juices can be very poisonous, especially when they taste unusually bitter.

The drink was bitter but the CSIR official ignored this, perhaps thinking the bitterness came from the karela .

Saxena was initially taken to a CGHS dispensary and then to Rockland Hospital, but he was dead by then.

" No doctor told us to have vegetable juice. We were inspired by Baba Ramdev`s suggestions and his programmes on the television. I will never ever listen to his suggestions again," said Neeraj, a resident of Nanakpura.

Bottle gourd, cucumber, squash, pumpkin and melon can turn lethal if they taste bitter as they have Tetracyclic Triterpenoid Cucurbitacins compound which is highly toxic. The compound is responsible for bitterness in vegetables.

Doctors say that vegetables like bottle gourd, cucumber, squash, pumpkin and melon are considered one of the healthiest vegetables but they can turn lethal, if bitter. In botanical terms these belong to the cucurbitaceae family. Cucurbitacins are complex compounds found in plants belonging to the cucumber family.

The incident took place on June 23 and the medical report on the CSIR official`s death - revealing bottle gourd poisoning as the cause of death - was finalised this week.

"Saxena was brought dead to us while Neeraj was in a bad condition. It was a case of bottle gourd poisoning. An endoscopy revealed that his stomach was profusely bleeding. The deceased had consumed 250 ml of the juice while his wife had consumed 150ml of the same juice," said Dr Sharma of RocklandHospital.

The diabetic couple started taking their daily dose of `lauki` juice some four years ago, inspired by prescriptions doled out by a yoga guru on television. They would prepare a concoction of juice from lauki and karela with black salt. It was a daily routine.

Things went horribly wrong on June 23. The drink was unusually bitter. Paying no attention to this, both drank the freshly-extracted juice. Soon after, they took ill.

Botanists say that higher levels of chemicals cucurbitacins are triggered by wide temperature swings, high temperature, too little water and low soil fertility.

Improper storage of vegetables are also one of the reasons of forming such compounds.

These toxins, Dr Sharma said, cause swelling in the liver, pancreas, gall bladder and kidney when absorbed into the blood.

" This in turn can lead to multiorgan dysfunction which can be fatal in some cases," he said.

Research by the Departments of Medicine and Department of Anaesthesiology of the Himalayan Institute of Medical sciences at Dehradun assessed the effects of bitter bottlegourd.

" Drinking one or two glasses of fresh bottle gourd juice in the morning on an empty stomach is one such practice particularly in India. However, sometimes, such practice can become dangerous and life threatening," theresearch said.

The research also said that severe toxicity occurs accidentally in patients who regularly consume large quantities of fresh bottle gourd juice as a health drink on the advice of naturopaths or ayurveda doctors.

A few years ago, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences ( AIIMS) in association with AYUSH conducted a research on plants and vegetables that are reported to have cure a for diabetes.

"There weren`t any great minimising effects of these plants like gourd, neem and jamun even though some of them are known to bring down sugar levels. In fact, a few of these plants had no effect at all in controlling diabetes," said Dr Anoop Mishra, the principal investigator of the research.

Dr Mishra is also chairman, National Diabetes, Obesity, Cholesterol Foundation and director, and head of the Department of Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, FortisHospital. " The patients should not follow these things as mainstream treatment of diabetes," he said.

Pakistan is now the land of porn

Pakistan is now the land of porn

Here’s something sleazier and horny for the mobs in Pakistan to become the top dogs in porn search. Pakistan has notched up a rather unenviable first place, for porn searches per person across the world, according to Google search trends.

According to a Fox News report, Pakistan is "top dog in searches for `horse sex`, since 2004, `donkey sex` since 2007, `rape pictures` and `rape sex` since 2004, `child sex` between 2004 and 2007 and since 2009, `animal sex` since 2004 and `dog sex` since 2005".

Islamic scholar and writer Feroz Ahmed Bakhat said, “ I am shocked that the Pakistani society is so degenerated that they got such a dubious distinction. The leadership of Pakistan must wake up. It is high time.”

The country also tops or has topped in searches under the categories of sex, camel sex, rape video, child sex video and some other unprintable. The Pakistani embassy did not reply to a request for an interview, the report said.

So far, Pakistan has banned 17 websites for offensive or blasphemous material and is monitoring seven others (including Google, Yahoo, YouTube and Amazon). In addition to banning content on 17 websites, including islamexposed.blogspot.com, Pakistan is monitoring seven other sites -- Google, Yahoo, Bing, YouTube, Amazon, MSN and Hotmail - for anti-Islamic content.

The country`s punishment for those charged with blasphemy is execution, but the question remains what - if anything -- can be done about people who search for porn on the web. For now all we can say is meet the all new Pornistan.

Housewives are not beggars: SC tells govt

SC slams govt for equating housewives with beggars and prostitutes

The Supreme Court has slammed the Government for clubbing housewives with prostitutes, beggars and prisoners in the Census and describing them as economically non-productive workers. SC has said that housewives are employees and their ‘gratuitous’ services to their husbands and children can not be taken for granted.

Slamming the government’s “insensitive approach”, the court said Parliament should revisit the Motor Vehicles Act and matrimonial laws to remove the existing “gender bias”, sources said.

"This bias is shockingly prevalent in the work of Census. In the Census of 2001 it appears that those who are doing household duties like cooking, cleaning of utensils, looking after children, fetching water, collecting firewood have been categorized as non-workers and equated with beggars, prostitutes and prisoners who, according to Census, are not engaged in economically productive work.”

"As a result of such categorization about 36 crores (367 million) women in India have been classified in the Census of India, 2001 as non-workers and placed in the category of beggars, prostitutes and prisoners," the apex court observed.

"A wife/mother does not work by the clock. She is in constant attendance of the family throughout the day and night unless she is employed and is required to attend the employer`s work for particular hours. She takes care of all the requirements of husband and children including cooking of food, washing of clothes, etc. She teaches small children and provides invaluable guidance to them for their future life,"the apex court said.

A bench of justices GS Singhvi and AK Ganguly reversed an Allahabad High Court verdict that awarded Rs 2.5 lakh to the family of a woman killed in a road accident because the victim was just a housewife.

The court had considered the victim’s monthly income as Rs 1,250 and put her in the category of non-workers. SC increased the compensation to Rs 6 lakh and asked the insurance company to pay Rs 50,000 to the family.

Music helps kids improve learning

If your child is a music lover then be sure that he is a good learner. A new research has claimed that learning to play musical instruments has positive effects on the brain and it helps children improve their learning and understanding of language.
The research says that during the process of musical training there develops a connection the brain cells which helps in other form of communication, such as speech, reading and understanding a foreign language. It helps the students to increase their concentration power and enjoy their studies.
The researchers, at the Northwestern University (NU) in Illinois said that "The effect of music training suggests that, akin to physical exercise and its impact on body fitness, music is a resource that tones the brain for auditory fitness.”
Musicians also have larger brain volumes in areas important for playing a musical instrument, including motor and auditory regions, the researchers said.
They found that these advantages of music training appear to cross over to our understanding of speech.
Music and speech have quite a bit in common. They both use pitch and timing to get information across, and both require memory and attention skills to process, they said.
Some studies showed that children with musical training have more neural activity in response to changes in pitch during speech than those without such training.
