Dishonour killing: Farmer hacks daughter to death

In an incident of dishonour killing, a farmer on Saturday allegedly hacked his daughter - who attempted to run away with her lover - to death and then killed his wife who tried to intervene at Nattarpatti village in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.

Police, who described the incident as dishonour killing, said the farmer Vinaitheerthan (63) had a heated exchange with his 21-year-old daughter Arunadevi when she was leaving home early on Saturday morning for eloping with her lover Devarajan, a mechanic, of the same area.

The farmer objected to their affair for the past two years and had warned his daughter against meeting Devarajan who reportedly belonged to another community.

Arunadevi got up at around 0400 hrs to run away with her lover but her father stopped her, leading to an altercation, police said.

Police said he then hacked her to death. When her mother tried to intervene, he attacked her with a pestle. Both the women died on the spot. The farmer later surrendered to the police who arrested him.

More people die of medical error than road accidents

More people die of medical error than road accidents

Can you imagine even in your wildest drems that almost one million people die of medical errors every year all over the world? This is the shocking report of the Institute of Medicine. This means that more people die from medical errors than from motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer or AIDS. Government agencies, purchasers of group health care, and health care providers work together to make the health care system safer for patients and the public. But, finally, it is up to you not to be part of the horror story doing the rounds.

Such errors can happen during even the most routine tasks, such as when a hospital patient on a salt-free diet is given a high-salt meal. Most errors result from problems created by today’s complex health care system. But errors also happen when doctors and their patients have problems communicating.

According to eminent Medical journalist Sujata Shakeel, " this is shocking to say the least that medical errors are causing so much deaths. It is wake call for medical fertinity. They must rise equal to the occassion to prevent these deaths."

The single most important way you can help to prevent errors is to be an active member of your health care team. That means taking part in every decision about your healthcare. Research shows that patients who are more involved with their care tend to get better results. Some specific tips, based on the latest scientific evidence about what works best, follow.

Make sure that all of your doctors know about everything you are taking. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medicines, and dietary supplements such as vitamins and herbs. At least once a year, bring all of your medicines and supplements with you to your doctor. “Brown bagging” your medicines can help you and your doctor talk about them and find out if there are any problems. It can also help your doctor keep your records up to date, which can help you get better quality care.

According to report, make sure your doctor knows about any allergies and adverse reactions you have had to medicines. This can help you avoid getting a medicine that can harm you. When your doctor writes you a prescription, make sure you can read it. If you can’t read your doctor’s handwriting, your pharmacist might not be able to either. Ask for information about your medicines in terms you can understand—both when your medicines are prescribed and when you receive them. · What is the medicine for? How am I supposed to take it, and for how long? What side effects are likely? What do I do if they occur?

What food, drink, or activities should I avoid while taking this medicine? When you pick up your medicine from the pharmacy, ask: Is this the medicine that my doctor prescribed? A study by the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences found that 88 percent of medicine errors involved the wrong drug or the wrong dose.

If you have any questions about the directions on your medicine labels, ask. Medicine labels can be hard to understand. For example, ask if “four doses daily” means taking a dose every 6 hours around the clock or just during regular waking hours. Ask your pharmacist for the best device to measure your liquid medicine. Also, ask questions if you’re not sure how to use it. Research shows that many people do not understand the right way to measure liquid medicines. 9.

Ask for written information about the side effects your medicine could cause. If you know what might happen, you will be better prepared if it does—or, if something unexpected happens instead. That way, you can report the problem right away and get help before it gets worse. If you have a choice, choose a hospital at which many patients have the procedure or surgery you need. Research shows that patients tend to have better results when they are treated in hospitals that have a great deal of experience with their condition.

According to Delhi based Dr RK Caroli,if you are in a hospital, consider asking all healthcare workers who have direct contact with you whether they have washed their hands. Hand washing is an important way to prevent the spread of infections in hospitals. Yet, it is not done regularly or thoroughly enough. A recent study found that when patients checked whether health care workers washed their hands, the workers washed their hands more often and used more soap. When you are being discharged from the hospital, ask your doctor to explain the treatment plan you will use at home.

Nightclub owner molested me, says Delhi MBA student

It's not advisable to drink and drive, but it's an equally bad idea for a woman in an inebriated state to accept an offer of lift from a virtual stranger. An MBA student learnt this the hard way on July 22 in Delhi.

Speaking to MiD DAY, the victim said that on that night she had gone to RAAS bar, situated in B Block at Lajpat Nagar. There she joined a group of people including a Russian girl and Varun Arora, the bar owner, whom she had met for the first time. The victim says she did not speak to Varun at that point; they just drinking together.

"It was around 2 am when the bar closed. I called up the caretaker of my PG accommodation and asked him to arrange a cab for me. The caretaker expressed his inability and said I would have to return on my own. I was waiting for an auto-rickshaw or a taxi when Varun Arora, the bar owner, approached me and offered me a lift in his car. Varun assured me that he will drop me at my PG accommodation safely."

"I sat on the rear seat of the car while Varun was on the front seat along with the driver. However, on the way he stopped the car to sit beside me. He then started asking me questions about myself and eventually began molesting me. I resisted but he carried on. He threw me out of the car when I said that I am the daughter of a CBI officer and would call the police," alleged the victim.

The MBA student said that she suffered injuries on her arms and chest. She approached the police but was asked to come next day. She further alleged that she had to visit police station several times before an FIR was finally lodged.

Meanwhile, a police officer said that a report had been filed on the basis of the allegations made by the victim and the matter was being investigated. They also said that they were yet to get the forensic report of the victim.

"We have not arrested anyone in the case. She has charged the bar owner with attempted rape. We have taken the statement of Varun who claimed that the girl was demanding money. Varun has also alleged that he has a video recording of the girl when she was trying to blackmail him. But he has not given us the footage so far," said the police officer.

When contacted by MiD DAY, Varun Arora refused to speak on the matter. He claimed that he didn't know the victim. When this reporter said that a copy of the FIR was in his possession, Varun said that it was a fictitious account.

Delhi Sex Baba's associate taken into police custody

Delhi's self-styled Godman Rajiv Ranjan Dwevedi is currently behind bars under stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) charges after allegedly running a massive sex racket in the country for several years. He was nabbed in February after an undercover operation by the Delhi police.

Now, a close friend of his is about to share the same fate.

Ankit alias Praveen, an alleged associate of the Godman has been booked under the MCOCA by Delhi police. Ankit had been held earlier this year with six prostitutes in Saket.

Police claim that Ankit possesses a fortune of several crores, while in the past he was virtually penniless.

"He was only a taxi driver. But when he came in contact with Dwevedi he became a rich man almost overnight. We have gone through his bank transactions that run into crores of rupees. Ankit has booked three flats worth several crores in Mehruali area in south Delhi. How can a common taxi driver become a millionaire within a year while he doesn't have any income source to justify his assets?" said a senior police officer.

The officer also said that Ankit has been sent to police remand for two days and will be interrogated about his wealth. Police said he has been close to Dwivedi and was helping him run the nationwide sex racket.

"He used to arrange call girls for the flesh trade and so we booked him under MCOCA," the officer concluded.

From a security guard in Delhi earning Rs 6000 a month to a self-styled spiritual guru and sex-racketeer amassing property worth crores, Rajiv Ranjan Dwevedi, popularly known as the Sex Baba, has had a meteoric rise.

A 10th standard pass out, Dwevedi got his first job as a security guard at a five-star hotel in Agra. He later pursued the same vocation at a Delhi hotel.

In 1996, Dwevedi made a career change when he joined Lifeline Beauty parlour in Lajpat Nagar-II as a manager. It was then that he devised a plan for making quick money while looking at advertisements of beauty and massage parlours in a newspaper.

Dwevedi was inspired by the idea of running a sex trade under the guise of a beauty salon. In 1997, joining hands with his friends Sanjay Dwivedi and Sanjay Mishra, he opened a beauty parlour in a basement at Lajpat Nagar Part-2. They named the salon 'Sai Point Beauty Parlour and Training Centre,' as Dwevedi was a Sai Baba follower.

They offered Bangkok massage facilities to men for just Rs 650. The sex racket flourished and in a short while Dwivedi moved into a plush home in East of Kailash.

Dwevedi's luck ran out very soon and on July 1, 1997, Delhi police arrested him under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act. However, he was soon out on bail. His second arrest was in a robbery case in 1998, when he was held at the Badarpur police station. Again, he was released on bail. In 2003, he was arrested for running a sex-racket in NOIDA.

Police sources said that when Dwevedi was released this time, his spiritual leanings came to the fore. He changed his appearance, style of functioning and technique. He presented himself as a huge Sai Baba Bhakt to the masses. But material needs made him continue with the flesh trade. Soon, he had made it so big that he could operate a nationwide prostitution syndicate.

But all this was too good to last. On February 26, Dwevedi was nabbed by the Delhi police along with six women. He now will be charged under the stringent provisions of MCOCA.

Indian celebs in MMS scandals

Indian celebs in MMS scandals

A few months after her sister Isabel was embroiled in a sex tape controversy, which was being circulated in her name but actually featured a look-a-like, Katrina Kaif is now the target of a similar online craze. Not surprisingly, Katrina has issued a denial.

Porn sites and forums have been going gaga over the clip, featuring a Katrina look-a-like. The clip has been tagged Katrina Kaif sex scandal in a bid to garner most hits. It has reached the download limit on a couple of portals.

Despite the fact that the girl is clearly not Kat, an online debate is on to discuss the authenticity of the clip.

"It's unfair!" says a source close to Katrina, "People circulate videos and stories in her name to generate interest, debate and publicity. Every fair-skinned girl doesn't have to be Katrina or her lookalike! She finds it unfair that she's mostly made the target for such bizarre speculations."

MiD DAY visited the home of the 17-year-old student from Swami Vivekanand College, Chembur, who was allegedly raped by Pankaj Mishra, a management student from the same college. The duo had become friends on Facebook.

When asked whether they wanted the boy to get the strictest punishment, the father pointed to an idol and said, "We believe in God and want Him and the law to punish the boy. But, at the moment, we are just concerned about our daughter and her future."

The rape took place on July 21, but the family filed the police complaint only on Sunday. "We got delayed because of the college principal. She had assured us that she will take necessary action against the boy but it never happened," said the girl's mother.

"It was only when we came to know that his father works in the college that we filed a police complaint. When the boy was brought to the police station, he said that he had never met the girl. The principal did not take any action and delayed the case," she added.

In her statement to the police, the girl said, "We became friends through Facebook and met on July 19 and 20. I told him that I had a project to complete and he offered to help me. At 6.30 pm on July 21, we met at Saroj hotel in Chembur. Pankaj told me that we can work on the project at his residence as there was no one at his place. We went there by auto and started working."

"His maid was at home and left at 8 pm. Around 9.30, he went to have food and locked the door. He started misbehaving with me around 10.30 pm. I threatened to kill myself with a knife; he took the knife saying he would drop me home and then raped me at knifepoint. He locked me inside the room and then let me go to college in the morning," she added.

Tejnarayan Mishra, the accused's father, said, "The police have been forcing us to say that we were out of town on the day of the alleged rape. The truth is that we were at home and there is no way our son could have raped the girl at our residence."

Meanwhile, J K Phadnis, Principal of the Swami Vivekanand College in an interaction with the media said the boy was innocent. She refused to divulge details.
